We had a local contest on Saturday (I’m sure you followed it on Twitter …) and 4 of our lifters competed: Beth, Dave, Chris, and Brandon. (The pic above is what Brandon had in his car for after!)
Dave had a big day breaking the Oregon Masters state record for the Snatch and then hitting 2 PR’s on the Clean and Jerk!
Beth had been in Europe 2 days before this meet so you can imagine the jet-lag!! But, she still managed to pull off a contest PR on her Clean and Jerks!
Brandon won the 69’s.
And, Chris hit a PR Snatch, matched his PR clean and jerk, for a new PR Total!!
Here’s the video:
Now that the contest is out of the way, light workouts are a thing of the past … back to the heavy.
Back Squat: 1RM
Snatch: 1RM + 3×3 + 1RM
Clean and Jerks: 1RM
Back Squats: 3×3 @ 90%+
Results are in! Similar to last month, Black Box FW (BBFW) took top honors in the individual Male category, and PDX took the team competition for both our Men’s group and our Women’s group! Go team go!
Our female lifter Cindy barely beat out Ashleigh of BBFW by only 3 Sinclair points to win the female individual contest!!
Beth and Amy of PDX were in a tight fight with Summer of BBFW. And, our ladies Brandy and Spence were close to Lindsey, Kris, and Court. I see some battles here in the future
JB annihilated the rest of us mere mortals again on the guys side! But, there was a close competition between Coach Dutch and our man Brandon. Both in lighter divisions, and hitting Sinclairs of 195.6 and 190.14, respectively. Gotta up that squat Brandon to catch him!
Tom, of Black Box took Chris, of PDX, by only 1 point!! (Chris also beat ME by 1 point.)
And a big shout out to Peter, of PDX, for trying over and over and over to make that 150k front squat! You’ll get it, brother. Soon!
That puts a few of our crew (Arron, Beth, Brandon, Trevor, and others) in their element. Looking forward to it!
And … here was Wednesday’s WOD of DOOM:
Clean + Jerks: 1RM + 4x(3+1) @ 80% + (btw, 3+1 means 3 cleans then jerk the last one!)
Snatch: 1RM + 4×3 @ 80%
RDL’s: up to one heavy set of 5 (NOT a Max!)
(video below)
In our second contest with Black Box FW, we stepped up to the rack and hit some Front Squats. Many lifters came near their PR’s, Beth matched hers, and Andrew hit a 10k PR! Good work, people!
Even better, while last time Beth was the sole female, this time we had an equal number of Ladies and Gents!!!
| NAME | Weight Class | Front Squat | Sinclair |

Beth |
75 | 84 | 92.82 |
| Amy | 75+ | 99 | 100.38 |

| Average Sinclair: | 84.03 |
The men were missing Arron, Trevor, Mike, Dave, and The Avenger Xi Xia. But, still had a good showing. Congrats Brandon for having the best Sinclair among the dudes!! And Andrew hit a 10k PR! Holy Heavens!!
| NAME | Weight Class | Front Squat | Sinclair |
| Andrew | 77 | 115 | 143.85 |
| Brandon | 69 | 135 | 190.14 |
| Nick | 77 | 135 | 168.87 |

One of the things I love about this new monthly contest is that it will give us benchmarks as both individuals AND as a group that we can strive to beat. It’s always motivating to compete against others. But, the real competition is always with yourself.
(For instance, I used to have a front squat of 155 when I was 85k which meant my old front squat sinclair was 183.86. My own goal is to get that front squat back, but at my new lower bodyweight, which would give me a sinclair of 193.89. That would beat Brandon! … of course, he’s moving down to the 62’s and keeps getting stronger. But, a man can dream can’t he?!)
And here’s the video showing some of the highlights … and best misses!
Tuesday Nights WOD was:
Light-ish day
Power Clean: 1RM + 4×2 @ 80%+
Power Snatch: 1RM
Front Squat: 1RM
OK, so I posted yesterday our own teams results (here). Above are the results form Black Box FW. They had some HUGE lifts that resulted in them winning the individual titles. Congratulations Summer and JB!!! Great stuff.
Our own Beth’s 77 put her in second place, and our dude Arron’s 162 puts him in Third. Considering that Beth matched her PR with that lift, and Arron’s was a PR, they had to really work for it.
Proud Coach Day!
Team PDX wins the team title with a higher averaged Sinclair. We had 127 to their 107. This means they are on our tail! We gotta step it up!!
Great work everyone from both teams!!! Here are the video’s from Black Box. Some really awesome lifting here:
“Easy” day
Front Squats: 1RM + 5×2 @ 90%+
Power Clean + Jerk: (1+3)RM
Power Snatch: 2RM
We had 8 lifters (1 female, 7 males) compete against our friends from Fort Worth, Texas at Black Box FW. A number of PR’s were set (Arron, Peter, and Ryland), and nearly everyone else matched their previous PR’s or came damned close.
It was great fun!!!
For Sinclair calculating I used the one here on the fit blog. There is another on the Queensland weightlifting site. (Keep in mind that Sinclair calculators are for the total, so since we’re only putting in cleans, that makes them seem lower than you might be used to.)
Beth, aka Bethanova: 71k bw, clean 70k, Sinclair 77.35
This matches her best ever clean and jerk. She took 75 and 72 a bunch of times, they all moved fast, but it was just not the day for it. She’ll be making 75 soon. I can feel it.
We’ll have more ladies in the mix for next months contest – Artie, Sara, Spence, Laurie, Amy, and Leslie that means you!
Arron, aka Arronovski: 80k bw, clean 132.5k, Sinclair 162.24
PR Clean!! Took 135, caught it, then couldn’t stand up. This is often what he does a few times before he makes a new PR. So, it won’t be long!
Brandon, aka The Toyev: 65k bw, clean 115k, Sinclair 160.2
2.5k under his best Clean and Jerk. Took 117.5 a few times, but it wasn’t there. Some days you eat the bar … some days it eats you. In the vid it looks like there MIGHT have been an elbow touch. We didn’t think there was when looking at it in person, so I gave it to him … you be the judge!
Chris, aka Kristov, aka Kristov The Terrible: 103k bw, clean 130, Sinclair 141.97
Took 132 and 135, but they didn’t want to jump onto his shoulders. The 130 matches his best, which he’s only gotten in a contest. So, that’s what we call a PBR (Portland best record).
Peter, aka Petarski, aka The Librarian: 100k bw, clean 120, Sinclair 132.5
PR clean!! He kept popping his hands off the cleans, though! Funny because that isn’t something that normally happens to him. But, making a one handed clean PR is its own kind of bad ass!!
Andrew, aka Andronov: 76k bw, clean 100k, Sinclair 126.04
Matches his best ever clean! Went for 102 and 105, but it wasn’t there. He’s been coming a long way!
Xi Xia, aka The Avenger: 94k bw, Clean 110k, Sinclair 124.53
Not only does he look like a super hero, he’s becoming quite the weightlifter! 110k matches his best clean. I think he’s good for more, a lot more. He’ll be lifting some serious weight in a year from now. Mark my words.
Ryland, aka Rylanov, aka Monarch of the Land of Rye: 82k bw, clean 82.5, Sinclair 99.69
PR Clean!! First bodyweight Clean! Ryland is coming back from a knee injury, so the PR is particularly fantastic!!
A few of the guys didn’t get in on the action. Next month Trevor, Sean, and Mike should be groovin’.
We had a great time down in Creswell, for the 2010 Heavy Athletics competition. Here’s a video of highlights.
Also, you don’t want to miss Beth’s badass miss. She cleans it, her hand pops out, and she re-racks it!! Wow …
Snatch, 62.5, Powered!
EASY 80k power clean!
Comes back with another easy PC with 82.5k
On Oct. 21st, 2 of our athletes (Leslie and Mark) competed at the Unsanctioned Halloweenie meet in Creswell, OR, put on by Iron Works Gym. It was a whole lot of fun, and Halloween themed!
They are both solid lifters and lifted remarkably well. Once I get the pictures developed (ya, film, so old school) I’ll post those with commentary, but for now, here are the results (as sent to me by Oregon’s LWC president Tom Hirtz):
